Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital
Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg was originally built in 1942, and was opened by Field Marshall Jan Smuts.
It was built with the aim of providing treatment to those wounded in the Second War, which was currently raging in various areas around the world.
Following the end of the war, it became the major hospital dedicated for the use of those in the rapidly developing area of Soweto.
Chris Hani-Baragwanath is often mentioned as being the biggest hospital in the world, in terms of the number of beds available in the various departments of the hospital, and in 1997 the Guinness Book of Records awarded a certificate to the hospital on this basis.
Since then has slipped in the rankings slightly, but with 3,400 bed capacity and a staff complement of 6,700, treating approximately 60,000 patents per year, Chris Hani-Baragwanath is still ranked the 3rd biggest hospital on the planet.
